Tourism potential of Karwar, and Growth in Demand for Farm Lands

Karwar: The district headquarters was once a center for foreign trade and now it will soon turn itself into a tourist spot. The district has immense scope for the development of beach tourism, eco tourism and adventure tourism and it is said that this is the reason that has brought up this new development.

Most of the land near the beaches that stretches from Majali to Devbag in Karwar taluk and also the land at Manjguni, Belambar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar Nadiwada areas and Bhatkal taluk have been purchased to set up resorts. The buyers include Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, many other industrialist's and NRI's.

In Joida and Yellapur taluks, lands are being purchased to establish jungle resorts. The promoters of tourism prefer establishing resorts rather than hotels, for the simple reason that resorts manage with temporary structures like huts. Moreover, they do not come under the ambit of Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) rules which says 'Building permanent structures within a radius of 500 meters of high tide level is prohibited'.

Another reason for the growth of resort culture in the district is that the Government offers attractive incentives to promote tourism. The rising demands for such resorts have encouraged the promoters to focus more on beach resorts as they offer more liberty to the tourists.

The river estuaries here propose the possibility for boating and fishing. Further more there is plenty of land that is available near the estuaries as these lands were previously used for shrimp culture. At present the land is abandoned as a deadly disease called the white spot surfaced in the shrimp ponds two years ago. This disease forced many shrimp farmers to quit shrimp farming and sell their lands.
